Mac OS X Lion e Iomega StorCenter ix2-200
Dopo tanta attesa e’ finalmente uscito Mac OS X Lion 10.7 e nonostante alcune controindicazioni ho subito aggiornato. Le controindicazioni riguardavano per lo piu’ la non compatibilita’ di alcuni vecchi programmi con il nuovo sistema operativo a causa in primis della rimozione dal nuovo sistema operativo di Rosetta, programma che permetteva di far girare applicazioni scritte per i sistemi PowerPC su sistemi Intel.
Da questo punto di vista non ho avuto finora problemi, anzi, forse, e’ stata un’occasione per fare pulizia di vecchi programmi anche inutilizzati.
Con mia sorpresa pero’ il problema piu’ grave ha riguardato tutt’altro.
Come molti ho un sistema NAS Ethernet di Iomega, lo StorCenter ix2-200, un modello entry level. Al riavvio nel nuovo aggiornato sistema operativo, alla connessione con il sistema, Lion ha mostrato la sua incompatibilita’. Ho sempre usato il nas con il protocollo di rete apple AFP (Apple Filing Protocol), e pare che il problema sia proprio in questo protocollo: Lion mi segnala che non e’ compatibile con la versione del server AFP integrata nel NAS Iomega. Non c’e’ stato verso di fare il collegamento.
Per ovviare al problema, ed evitare di rimanere senza i preziosi dati, ho provato ad effettuare il collegamento con un altro protocollo, il CIFS (Common Internet File System): l’esperimento ha funzionato. Ma dato che i sistemi Apple con l’AFP utilizzano dei file di sistema particolari per trattare file e cartelle, mi sono ritrovato con numerosi file e cartelle dai nomi assolutamente incomprensibili… spero che ritornando all’AFP il problema scompaia, anche se non so quando sara’ possibile: dopo aver contattato l’assistenza Iomega sono stato informato che non erano al corrente del problema e che ci vorra’ un po’ prima di vedere un nuovo firmware.
As a reader pointed out, I have not indicated a way to use cifs: in finder, under the menu “Go” choose the item “Connect to server”, then in the window that appears fill in the address field with “cifs://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx” where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP Address of the NAS. Then Connect.
This is valid for any NAS that supports CIFS, not just Iomega ix2-200.

Apparently some of the problems with the unit and Lion have been addressed by Iomega with the firmware update… however, I’m having trouble configuring a brand new unit from Lion, apparently without the Storcenter software it’s impossible to configure a unit like this for the first time.
Should I just get someone with a PC to help me out? I just need to configure the RAID, the folders, upgrade the firmware and configure permissions.
By the way, even without the firmware up, I get to see all the folders on the Finder… I use CIF at my job to access some folders, perhaps I’m just accessing them using CIF.

You can configure the unit with the web interface, you only need to know the ip address of the storcenter and the login info that you should find in the manual for a fresh install.
I’m having the same problem. Only my StorCentre isn’t new. I was on windows and then have moved to mac. I can’t connect to it using earthernet and the Manager that Iomega made for mac doesn’t work on Lion. It’s really frustrating as I originally bought it for backing up my files.
Looks like it will end up in the bin – as someone whose not a computer whizz and I’ll never buy Iomega again. It’s alright saying it’s addressed in the latest firmware update but you have to be able to get into the system manager to update and as Lion says PowerPC no longer supported when I try and install the manager – I have no chance!
